It’s the end of the year and Spotify graciously created a playlist of my top 100 most played songs for 2017, conveniently called “top songs for 2017.” It’s my second such playlist (2016 was jammed full of good music, some new and plenty not so new) and let me tell you, this playlist is full of songs I remember putting on repeat and just letting them play endlessly.
Sometimes a song is so freaking good, so well made, speaks so clearly to my inner being that I simply have to listen to it… over and over and over. Constantly, without stop.
Here’s a couple:
- “Let Go – Sir Sly Remix” by RAC, Kele, MNDR
- “Warrior” by Steve James, Lights
- “Strong – RAC Remix” by London Grammar, RAC
- Stranger than Earth” by Purity Ring
In other news, I painted a picture of Dianne. 🙂

“Why fit in when you were born to stand out” – Dr. Seuess
Life surely is some sort of journey.
Many steps taken in one or different directions – over a lifetime – will take you somewhere. But is it the place you want to be?
I’ve found myself deliberately (and accidentally) in places, doing things that if I’d asked my younger self, I would have surely laughed at the question.
Regardless, here I am.
Luckily I’m still me, haven’t lost myself or my love of art.

Earthly Elements . . .
Slow weekend, not a whole lot getting accomplished.
I’m excited that my training at work is over with and I don’t have to wake up early or deal with traffic anymore. It’s the little things really. 🙂

I’m enjoying the Inky Leak Brush set I scooped up from GrutBrushes, I have an idea for a whole series of illustrations with them, but that’ll be for another time. For now, I’m just experimenting and getting a feel for what each of them do.
When I sat down to create today, I initially started to make another series of thumbnail/paintover/explorations, but I got distracted by some of the earlier stages and just started having fun. Before I knew it I had something that was really catching my eye and I just rolled with it.
A previous version had her blowing air bubbles out of each sides of her mouth apparatus, like deep sea divers might. I’ll probably revisit the idea, putting her under water, with hair flowing and maybe some pipes/chains flowing out and around her.
Time will tell.
For now, it’s bedtime.

I’ve been wanting to get back into photo manipulation for awhile now. Having leveled up my painting skills, I’m interested in seeing how the two will combine.
I guess we’ll see.

It’s been too long.
Finished up a big commission yesterday, really proud how it all came together, hope to be able to share that work soon. In the meantime I’m setting aside time to work on some personal work.
I’ve been putting off creating a website for far too long. So, it’s time to break out the HTML notes and start coding. 😀 The website will be some sort of store, blog, portfolio integration/hybrid. Right now the R&D team is looking into the best route to combine the three.
Until then, I’ll be focusing my efforts on getting the crew ready to blast off unto the unknown.

I decided to do things a bit differently this time around.
For starters I kept my brush at 100% Opacity.
Secondly, I only used one brush (the Horse Main brush from the Impasto Brushes from the GrutBrushes.com).
Thirdly, I choose my color palette prior to starting this painting, which felt weird, but I had already chosen the reference image and had some inspiration. So, my color choices were based off of those feelings and ideas.
Lastly, I did my best to think before placing each brushstroke, focusing on if using a vertical or horizontal or diagonal stroke would be best then choosing the appropriate color, then making the stroke.
All in all, I didn’t waste as much time and energy fixing mistakes or changing things and I felt like the painting as a whole came together far smoother than previous paintings. I can’t wait to use this technique again.
